Bar Android Opens In Tokyo, Caters To Android Crowd
There’s a new bar opening up out in Shibuya in Japan. It’s called the Bar Android, and not because they’re fanatically devoted to Philip K. Dick novels or because Brent Spiner’s tending bar there (though it would be awesome if he did show up for a night or two), but rather, it’s a bar entirely themed around Android phones and similar mobile devices.

Now, lest you get your feathers ruffled about equal opportunity, let me just say that word is that they’ll let any class of mobile phone user in, even iPhone users. And like many things in Japan, it’ll probably look strange to most at first glance.
First, the interesting thing is that the bar offers Android-themed snacks, like Gingerbread men, (hopefully there’ll also be some love for things like frozen yogurt and eclairs as well), though that’s not where the interesting stops. The bar also has plenty of power outlets, to let you charge your Android gear, as well as a projector so that you can put your app of choice up on a big screen or play some videos. Kind of a nifty idea–everybody gets a turn at playing video DJ up on the club’s big screen.
Snacks and drinks reportedly come at one price–500 yen each (roughly six bucks US) and a full meal is 1000 yen (about $12).
And in what may be the strangest thing of all, Bar Android is only open on Mondays between 7 PM and 11:30 PM in Shibuya, roughly a few train stops down from Cafe Ease, which offers iPads at every table.
In a way, I really like this idea, and certainly wouldn’t mind seeing a few more themed bars around here. The World of Warcraft bar could be interesting enough, and if someone opened an actual Star Wars cantina I might well never leave.
