Digital Storm Hailstorm Offers Up Monster New Gaming PC

Liquid Cooled Overclocked Processor Main Feature of Massive New Gaming System

Anyone remember that old song Santa Baby? You know, the song that featured the nonstop litany of desired gifts the singer wanted for Christmas? Whether or not you find the song distasteful, there’s one item that even she might have balked at adding–the new Hailstorm gaming PC from the folks out at Digital Storm.

We’ve heard of Digital Storm hardware before, known for being high-powered and priced accordingly, but this one just might take the taco (at least for now).

The biggest point here is the Hailstorm’s so-called “Sub-Zero Liquid Chilled System”, which uses what’s described as a “series of thermoelectric cooling peltier coolers”, which in turn drops the temperature of the fluid being used to cool the PC down to below freezing. But apparently this allows the fluid to stay at sub-freezing temperatures and yet remain fluid enough to circulate through the system. The physics of this somewhat elude me.

But it’s what this cooling system is keeping cool that has the most bearing for us–the Hailstorm packs a whopping hexa-core Intel i7 processor, that in turn has been overclocked to an unsettlingly high 4.6 GHz. You’ll also get three Nvidia GeForce GTZ 580 GPUs, six gigs of RAM, a 1200 watt power supply and more besides.

That’s the standard system, and of course there will be some customization options offered in there, so you can dial back the system’s potency a bit and get an accompanying drop in the price tag. And it’s a doozy of a price tag, too–the full version is going to run you $6903. Though the way systems are going, wait five years or so and this will be the standard $500 model at Best Buy.

But if you want the absolute best to take on your favorite games, then this is one you’re going to want to have a look at.

This is the best part of the systems design. Instead or using the peltiers to directly cool the CPU which has often been problematic in practice. DS has used the peltiers to cool the fluid in a more standard ‘water cooled’ system except the Water cooling is nothing of the kind No water involved. Most likley some glycol alcahol mixture similar to what circulates in your fridge or M. Shumaker’s F1 radiator a fluid that will still be liquid down to at least -20 DegC.

Thanks for the physics note, Vaughan–it had me a little puzzled, and I had definitely not thought of using glycol alcohol or the like instead of water. Always welcome to get a little help from your friends!
