Acer John Doe 4.8-inch Android Smartphone / Tablet, Specs, Features & Release Date Public, Name & Price Still Secret

Acer Steps Up to the Plate With Brand New Android Super Smartphone

Besides the Samsung Nexus S and the Motorola Olympus, super Android smartphones meant to arrive at some point in the near future, we also have an Acer handset that looks pretty hot, at least on paper. The nameless 4.8-inch Android smartphone (that could be considered a tablet too, just like the Dell Streak) has been properly announced today right next to that Windows 7 tablet we were talking about earlier today.

Acer’s “next-generation smartphone” doesn’t have a name, which is really strange for a device that’s supposed to be “100% Smartphone, 100% Tablet!” But let’s move on to specs and features for this Acer John Doe device:

  • LED-backlit 4.8-inch touchscreen display
  • 1,024 x 480 resolution, 21:9 aspect ratio
  • 4-keys: Home, Search, Back and Menu
  • 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor
  • 8-megapixel camera with LED Flash
  • HD 720p video recording
  • 2-megapixel front-facing camera
  • HSDPA 14.4Mbps
  • DLNA connectivity
  • HDMI support
  • Acer Revo multimedia center support
  • Dolby Surround
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • Gyroscope
  • Accelerometer
  • Android 2.2 (at least) with Adobe Flash 10.1 out of the box
  • Flickr, Facebook, YouTube support
  • Alive app store support

The phone/tablet seems ready to offer you a great Android experience, and it will be interesting to see how Acer will do in this cutthroat Android business where so many companies are fighting for our attention. The unnamed Android handset looks great on paper but I’m kind of surprised Acer describes it as a smartphone/tablet. What will Acer decide to install on the device later on? Gingerbread or Honeycomb? As you might already know, Google is not exactly happy with Android tablets running Froyo and Honeycomb (Android 3.0) will probably be the OS to be used by current and future Android tablets in the following months.

This John Doe Acer smartphone/tablet is scheduled to hit stores at some point in the second quarter of 2011, so by that time Acer will have plenty of time to decide what Android version will the device run right out of the box. Unfortunately pricing details, just like the name of this thing, are top secret so you’ll just have to wait some more until Acer will be ready to reveal them; say, CES 2011?
