Netflix Streaming Only Plan Now Officially Available In The US
Oh Netflix, you probably made so many people happy this morning with your latest announcement — a streaming only plan is available for those in the US and it is priced at only $7.99 per month. Then again, you have probably angered just as many with your price increase.

Yes, Netflix did a good and bad announcement this morning. Good for some and bad for some, depending on whether or not you need to get DVD’s by mail or can get by with streaming only. Interestingly enough, the price of the streaming only plan came in at $7.99 — the same as Hulu Plus. Though truth be told, we tend to believe that is more coincidence than anything.
Bottom line, those interested can now sign up for (or downgrade their current DVD plan to) streaming only and moving forward only have to shell out $7.99 per month for their Netflix fix.
But that was the good news, here is the bad. The plans that include DVD’s by mail have gone up. Granted, the increase is not huge, only $1 per month on the two lower end plans, but they are increasing everyone — new and current customers alike. Personally I would have though that current customers would have been grandfather in with the old prices. But this is what I was greeted with when logging into my Netflix account this morning.
“The price of your 1 DVD out at-a-time (Unlimited) plan will change to $9.99 (plus any applicable tax) a month starting with your next billing period on or after Jan 02, 2011.”
Happy Holidays to you Netflix. That said, it is only a $1 per month I am not going to cancel, still it seems in bad form.
The $1 per month increase is for the unlimited per month one and two discs out at a time plan. Jumping up to three DVD’s is an increase of $3 and it only goes up from there with the eight DVD’s out plan seeing an increase of $8 per month.
