PlayStation Phone Teased By Sony Ericssson CEO

Rumors of an Android-powered PlayStation phone from Sony (or Sony Ericsson) has been one of the hot “PSP 2″ rumors this year. Fuel was added to the fire when a few weeks ago, popular tech blog Engadget posted pictures of the alleged “PlayStation phone”. Now, Sony Ericsson CEO (and known TFTS fan) Bert Nordberg has chimed in on the possibility of the PlayStation phone. His comments are… cryptic.

Talking to the Wall Street Journal, Nordberg said on the possibility of the PlayStation phone:

There’s a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere. Sony has an extremely strong offering in the gaming market, and that’s very interesting. Sony is of course a very strong brand, and why shouldn’t we use that? Gaming, including content, is a very interesting proposition.

Nordberg went on to say that he believes that the current generation of touchscreen phones aren’t “optimized for games.” Nordberg said that he wants Sony Ericsson to make a lot of “noise” at the GSM Mobile World Congress – the biggest trade show for mobile phones – next year in Spain.

As many readers likely know, Sony Ericsson is a 50-50 joint venture between Sony and Swedish firm Ericsson, combining Sony’s experience in consumer electronics with Ericsson’s telecommunications experience. When asked about Sony Ericsson’s history with Sony’s gaming properties, Nordberg said: “I haven’t dug into that history, but the future might be brighter.”

Mr. Nordberg told the WSJ that the problem with launching a phone-based mobile platform wasn’t technological. Instead, the legal rights were more of a hurdle. On that front, Nordberg said, “I’m very glad that we work with a company like Sony, who actually knows how to do it.”

In other news, Nordberg says he expects Android to be Sony Ericsson’s dominant operating system of choice for the next two years, at least.
