HootSuite For iOS Updated, Now A Universal App Supporting The iPad & iPhone
HootSuite has offered the latest update for their iOS Twitter app. The latest version which is presently available in the App Store is 2.0.0 and it is now a universal app with support for the iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad.

The app remains available as a free download and in addition to becoming a universal app has also been given what is described as “bug fixes and minor updates.” Not surprisingly, those bug fixes and minor updates were not detailed any further, but then again why complain about something that is getting fixed. Otherwise, the HootSuite app is noted as being iOS 4.0 friendly and requiring iOS 3.1 or later.
That aside, there was a little surprise on my end after seeing the app was released as a universal app. Keep in mind, I am not saying it is bad, in fact I do like it, but more on that in a moment. In the leadup to the release of HootSuite for the iPad, the description read as follows;
“We’ve hand-crafted a mobile app especially for the iPad and designed it to compliment your HootSuite web account. This new owl makes use of the tablet’s larger screen size to maximize the tools you’d typically use on the device, plus includes most of the goodies that you currently enjoy in HootSuite.”
Needless to say, saying hand-crafted for the iPad and being a new owl and all that good stuff in the above comment would have lead one to think this was going to be a complete re-write of the previous version and that it would be iPad specific. Like I mentioned, a little surprised, but on the positive side lets not dwell on that because the app does perform rather well.
Current HootSuite users will have it easy as they will only have to enter their username and password and all the settings and accounts will be imported. I think it took longer to download and install the update than it did to begin tweeting. Otherwise, the app is fast and smooth. In addition, moving from account to account and column to column is wonderful.
Similar to other iPad apps, there is a different layout for portrait and landscape and they each take advantage of the display size. Posting a new tweet offers a nice floating window that has a nice writing area along with an easy way to schedule the post for later as well as attaching links, photos and even your location.
All said and done, this is not going to fully replace my use of the official Twitter app on the iPad, but it will be a nice compliment. Of course, that is the same way I use Twitter on my Android smartphone, the official app along with HootSuite. Plus as a HootSuite user on the web it is nice to know my settings and accounts carry over from platform to platform with a simple login.
