Want A Kinect For Christmas? Buy Now.

Microsoft Exec Says Kinect In High Demand, Buy Before This Week Is Over To Get One By Christmas

The tech blog echo chamber is abuzz of quotes from the Web 2.0 Summit this week. Yesterday, Google CEO Eric Schmidt waved around a Nexus S – or “unannounced product” as he called it. Today at the conference, on a panel about video games, Microsoft’s Don Mattick talked about the success of Kinect. When asked when you should order one if you want one for Christmas, Mattick replied, “By the end of this week.”

Although the question was asked in jest by former EA executive turned venture capitalist Bing Gordon, Mattick’s answer was serious, and he insisted he wasn’t trying to spike early sales. Instead, Mattick cited the massive demand that Kinect is facing, and honestly seems to think that they could be short this holiday season.

Our quick spot check shows that BestBuy.com, GameStop.com and Amazon.com were sold out of the Kinect. Target.com had them in stock. Walmart.com had them in stock, but requires you to buy them in bundles with your selection of 2 out of 3 games – you may be turned off by Kinect.

If you’re looking for Kinect, you may have more luck at your local retail stores. Try Target, Kmart and Walmart as opposed to dedicated electronics retailers like Best Buy and Game Stop.

Do you think Kinect will be hard to find this Christmas? Will you be trying to get one this year for the kids? Tell us your stories in the comments section.
