T-Mobile Samsung Nexus S Shown Off by Google’s CEO; Eric Schmidt Talks Gingerbread Too
Yesterday I told you that Web 2.0 Summit will bring us Android 2.3 Gingerbread courtesy of Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO but I wasn’t really expecting this rumor to come through. And, in fact, it didn’t since Google’s chief had something else to show us, the Nexus S smartphone we keep seeing in leaks (image available after the break).

I don’t know if Samsung is happy about all of this, although Eric Schmidt never mentioned the name of this “unannounced phone”, but it’s pretty clear we’re talking about the Samsung (Google) Nexus S. The phone sports T-Mobile support, which means the carrier, will be, yet again, Google’s partner in crime when it comes to launching new Nexus smartphones.

Since Google’s CEO never dared to mention the name of the device, don’t expect any specs and features either from Eric Schmidt, at least not today, and not at Web 2.0 Summit. He did say though that Gingerbread is supposed to arrive in the following weeks so can we expect to see the Nexus S become official at an upcoming Google event?
The Nexus S (Nexus Two) was rumored to be launched on November 11 at the same time with Gingerbread but the whole thing, confirmed in part by the leaks coming from Best Buy on that particular date, was postponed. The word on the street is that Samsung has to fix some manufacturing issues, although other rumors claim the phone will come with a dual-core processor, instead of a regular, single core 1.2GHz Hummingbird CPU.
That’s why Samsung postponed the launch, so our best guess right now is that the upcoming Gingerbread event will also bring us the Nexus S. And while Gingerbread wasn’t demoed either on stage today, Eric Schmidt did reveal that Android 2.3 will come with NFC technology on board. Exciting times are ahead of us, smartphone fans!
And by the way, Apple, the ball is in your court now; iOS 5 will probably have to come with near-field-communication support too.
