Netflix for Android Coming in 2011 to “Selected” Handsets Only

Netflix for Android Is Just a 2010 Wet Dream; The App Delayed to 2011 Due to Fragmentation Issues?

Netflix is growing more and more popular and soon I wouldn’t be surprised if your next toaster would be able to stream videos via this particular service while also dealing with your morning bread at the same time. The iPhone has it, the iPad has it and even that young blood that we like to refer to as Windows Phone 7 has it. Not to mention all the gaming consoles that come with Neflix powers too!

But you know what particular popular platform doesn’t have an app for Netflix? Well I kinda spoiled it all for you with the title above, but yes, Android doesn’t have a Netflix application and as much as you’re dreaming that one shall magically appear in the Android Market by the end of the year, that’s not going to happen.

The news has been picked up by all the blogs in the stratosphere and it’s pretty much official. It all comes from Netflix’ own blog, as apparently Netflix is very aware of Android’s growing dominance of the smartphone sector.

But the fact that Android is popular is not enough for Netflix. In fact Netflix wants Google to fix certain issues including security concerns, proper DRM system and most importantly Android fragmentation. And while Google will be working on those things, Netflix will be more than happy to bring Netflix for Android out at some point early next year, but only on “select”, and by that we read “really hot” Android devices.

Netflix will apparently work with various, but “select,” manufacturers out there in order “to add content protection to their devices” in order for that content to be protected so Netflix can keep obtaining “content from major studios for [their] subscribers to enjoy.” Yeah, I said content a bunch of times there just to make sure you get the message Netflix tries to sent out. It wants to prevent piracy, keep studios happy but also keep its customers happy at the same time too.

We’ll be back with more news as on Netflix for Android as soon as we have new updates, but in the mean time you can bet your ass that Stevie J., the supreme commander of Apple, will make sure everybody knows Netflix has a hard time developing apps for Android but not iOS.
