Fils-Aime: No Wii 2 Until Wii Sells 45 Million In United States
If you’re eagerly awaiting the next generation entry from Nintendo, the Regginator just dashed your dreams. In a recent interview with Kotaku, Nintendo of America’s President said that Wii 2 isn’t needed in 2011. When asked if Wii 2 was needed for the holiday season in 2011, he answered with a short and unequivocal “No.” When he elaborated later on, he explained “After we’ve reached an installed base of 45 million here in the U.S., we can have a conversation about the next generation.”

He cited impressive sales numbers that show that the Wii is selling 23% than the PlayStation 2 had at this point in it’s lifespan, which makes the observant gamer wonder if the Wii is poised to knock the PlayStation off it’s high horse.
For those of you who like a little math with your news, here are these figures: the Wii has sold around 30 million consoles in the U.S. so far, which is about 7.5 million a year. If the Wii were to keep this momentum until it hit 45 million (which it probably won’t), that means that Wii sales would hit 45 million in just under two years. That sets up the release for Wii 2 sometime in 2013, or probably more realistically 2014.
But hey, in the meantime, it isn’t like they have much to worry about – Microsoft and Sony have both supposedly committed the Xbox 360 and PS3 to a ten-year life span, landing their next generation of consoles in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
