Call of Duty: Black Ops Sales Numbers Top Modern Warfare In Day One
In a press release issued today, the folks at Activision announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops has surpased the single-day launch record set by last year’s mega-popular Modern Warfare 2. In the first day, 5.6 million copies of Black Ops were sold in both the United States and United Kingdom.

Compared to last year, where Modern Warfare 2 sold just (just) 4.7 million copies. Both numbers are according to Activision’s own estimates, with no process provided. Like they did last year, Activision is comparing the estimated $360 million made on the game as the “biggest entertainment launch” ever.
All those pre-orders didn’t hurt, we guess. Midnight sales also help get people excited for the games, and as was reported, 12,000 locations across the globe had midnight sales for Black Ops.
Message board villain and Activison CEO Bobby Kotick said in the release:
There has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records for two consecutive years and we are on track to outperform last year’s five-day global sales record of $550 million. The game’s success underscores the pop culture appeal of the brand. Call of Duty: Black Ops is the finest game that Treyarch has ever made and raises the bar for online gameplay by delivering the deepest and most intense Call of Duty experience yet.
As was reported yesterday, Call of Duty: Black Ops has already had 1 million concurrent Xbox Live players – quite the achievement for the service.
Do you think Black Ops will best MW2′s five-day record? What about in all-time sales? Is Black Ops a better game?
