Windows Phone 7 Sales Numbers Disappointing?

Analyst Says Microsoft Only Sold 40k WP7 Devices On The First Day, Is Windows Phone 7 A Failure?

Microsoft is spending a metric fortune on Windows Phone 7 (with Kinect and WP7 having a combined $1 billion marketing budget), but is all that money going to waste? A market research source is reporting that Microsoft sold just a meager 40,000 WP7 devices, as compared to the 200k-something that Android and iPhone are each reportedly selling a day.

This comes from TheStreet.com, a sometimes controversial Wall Street news site, who cites “a market research source who tracks phone sales.” They’re reporting that on Monday, the US launch day for WP7, Microsoft moved just 40,000 phones. Of the four major carriers in the United States, WP7 was being offered on just two, T-Mobile and AT&T. Microsoft declined to comment when approached by TheStreet and T-Mobile said customer interest was good, but declined to provide sales numbers.

The smart money that many pundits are coming up with seems to be that there are too many WP7 devices out at there at launch. Unlike iPhone launches, or the Droid X and EVO 4G (which saw shortages, people waiting in line, etc), where a singular phone was the center of blog coverage and marketing – a grand total of nine WP7 phones were introduced initially by Microsoft. While the nine different phones gives customers a good selection, and some (like the HTC HD7 and Samsung Focus)  look like awesome phones, no single phone was the focus of the attention, possibly causing a lack of super nerd demand, like we see with some Android phones, and the iPhone.

But, don’t count out WP7. Like analyst Michael Cote told TheStreet, remember that the first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1, did awful at first – and now Android is this big growing monstrosity in the mobile space.

FYI. . .Android and iPhone are moving 200,000+ units a day, not a month.
