iPhone iOS 4.2 Update Brings Performance Boost to Older iPhones

Upcoming iOS 4.2 Speeds Up iPhone 3G Interface & Brings New Goodies

One thing I like with Apple’s software updates is that these often make older hardware quicker and snappier. This was the case with older PowerPC-based Macs that I had owned. Sometimes it’s hit-and-miss, though. For example, the iOS 4 update rendered the iPhone 3G slow and prone to freezing. The upcoming 4.2 update will fix all that.

Due to hardware limitations, the iPhone 3G version of iOS version 4 was a bit limited (no multitasking, for example). Additionally, users report issues like limited tethering and general UI slowdowns. Some of these were fixed by the 4.1 update, but iPhone users still on the 3G will be happy to hear that Apple has put in performance boosts with its upcoming iOS 4.2 update.

The upcoming update will reportedly bring in a snappier UI to the 3G. This includes smoother scrolling, faster webpage rendering, and improved pinch-and-stretch zooming. iPhone 3G (and other generation) users can expect the iOS 4.2 update to come out within the month.
