T-Mobile microSIMs Arrive in Retail Stores

T-Mobile Customers Hope For iPhone, Though microSIMs Later Explained For Galaxy Tab Android Tablets

As we recently covered, iPhone charging cables recently started being stocked in T-Mobile’s retail stores. An odd move, considering T-Mobile US doesn’t carry the iPhone. Then, it was found that T-Mobile stores were receiving microSIMs! The same pint-sized SIM card that is used by Apple in the iPad and iPhone 4. What does this mean? Is the iPhone coming to T-Mobile US? Probably not.

T-Mobile PR explained the appearance of the iPhone charging gear as being for unlocked and international iPhones. T-Mobile carries the iPhone in Europe, and actually were the exclusive carrier in Germany for some time. And while some Americans have been using jailbroken iPhones on T-Mobile’s network (with 2G EDGE only – yuck), T-Mobile has sort of been shy to encourage that anyway.

But, as the iPhone charging stuff coincide with the appearance of the microSIM arriving at T-Mobile stores, it really set off a lot of rumors. Even though microSIMs have been around for a while, Apple has really been the only manufacturer to really go with them (probably because of the less space they take up).

But, the microSIM arrival has been explained. We’re hearing (and as reported by Engadget), that the American version of the Galaxy Tab will be using the microSIM. Which is odd about this though, is that the European Galaxy Tab uses the regular “Mini SIM” (this is the SIM we’ve all known and loved for the past 10 years). Could Samsung have two different Galaxy Tabs with two different SIM slots?

Further evidence the T-Mobile is not getting the iPhone? In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Rene Obermann, CEO of Deutsche Telekom said that T-Mobile US wouldn’t be getting the iPhone in the “near future”. A misdirection? Maybe. But, it’s hard to imagine the iPhone arriving on T-Mobile US – officially – anytime soon.
