Shenmue 3 Possibly Coming

Sega West President Says No Plans For Shenmue 3, But "Never Say Never" Regarding The Third Game In The Unfinished Epic

“Do you know where I could find some sailors around here? Where do sailors like to hang out around here?” Anybody who’s played the first two Shenmue games will have fond memories of guiding Ryu Hazuki around, asking random strangers what bars sailors like to hang out at (and other odd monotone questions). While Yu Suzuki’s epic trilogy looked like it’ll be unfinished forever, Sega West president Mike West hinted that Sega could finish it, one day.

Talking to CVG, Mike West said, “hile at present we have no plans for the franchise [on next-gen consoles], the response to CVG’s question has certainly shown the Shenmue legacy ignites a lot of passion among fans. Never say never…”

Yep, that’s it. No announcement, but West sounds like that they’re open to the idea. As far as game executives go, Mike West is usually pretty honest. He said, point-blank, that Sega would not be making a sequel to Alpha Protocol because of the low Metacritic score it got. So, when he says Shenmue 3 is a possibility, it’s a possibility.

The first Shenmue was developed for the Sega Dreamcast and was the masterpiece of notable Japanese developer Yu Suzuki of Virtua Fighter, Hang-On and Out Run fame. Suzuki intended Shenmue to be his magnum opus and it was one of the most expensive video games ever produced when it was first released in 1999.

Not only would i buy this game, i would buy whatever console this game got released on. I would buy a new Television to enjoy it on, and would take several days off world to avoid distractions while i played it, even if it meant losing my job.

I really hope they consider remastering the entire series so far (including the missing boat ride to Hong Kong) and include the 3rd installment. Meaning players who haven’t been able to enjoy this series can enjoy it from the beginning.

Let it be called something like, “Shenmue Saga”, and get the promoters to spend a massive budget to correctly market this game to the masses, unlike the poor marketing that happened during its initial release, for which i blame Ozisoft here in Australasia.

Of course people would purchase this game, shenmue has a cult following, and those who dont know the series could be wooed into buying based on the word of mouth alone.

      Shenmue forever.
