Creative Zen Touch 2 Android PMP Quietly Introduced

Creative Intro's The Zen Touch 2 PMP, Features 3.2' Display, 2MP Camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth & Android 2.1

There are Android devices that come packing the Google Experience and then there are Android devices that are just that, devices running Android. And Creative has recently (and rather quietly) introduced the Zen Touch 2 PMP which is the latter — an Android 2.1 based portable media player.

Now before we dive into the disappointment about using Android without access to the Google Apps and the Android Market, lets at least mention the specs of the Zen Touch 2. And honestly, the specs alone seem to be fairly decent.

To begin with, there are three models available, one sporting 8GB of internal storage and the second with 16GB of internal storage. As for pricing, expect to pay £149.99 or £159.99 respectively. As for the remaining model, that includes 8GB of storage space and throws in GPS for £159.99. Unfortunately and rather strangely, there (at least as of now) is not an option for 16GB of storage with GPS.

Moving on to the remaining specs and we are looking at a 3.2 inch (480 x 320) touchscreen display, 2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, microSD card slot, miniUSB, 3.5 mm headphone jack. Other goodies include a composite video out, built-in microphone, built-in speaker, accelerometer and up to 25 hours of audio playback with up to 5 hours of video playback.

In terms of overall size, the Zen Touch 2 measures in at 120 x 60 x13mm and offers support for audio files to include MP3, AAC, WMA9, FLAC, OGG, ADPCM, MIDI and WAV with H.264, MPEG4, WMV9 and AVI on the video side. Lastly, for those into the audiobook scene, there is also support for Audible.

Bottom line here, and getting back to Android without Google — this does not necessarily mean it will be a bad device, it is just not the Android device that many are expecting. Personally, I have seen far more complaints dealing with Android and how people expect Market access and in the end, the Market access is for the most part limited to mobile phones. That said, what you are getting is a decent looking PMP with a wide variety of file format support.
