Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android 2.1 Eclair Update Coming on October 31 [Sony Ericsson Officially Announced the Xperia X10 Family Android 2.1 Eclair Update; It’s Going to be Halloween-ish]

The other day we were looking at the new official Sony Ericsson 3-minute clip in which the main new Android 2.1 features coming to the Xperia X10 were demoed officially by Sony Ericsson. We had no idea that the manufacturer would announce the release date of this update today, but we were pleasantly surprised to hear the X10 family will get Eclair in two days from now.

That’s right, October 31, also known as Halloween to some of you, is going to be the day when all Xperia X10 handsets out there will get their well-deserved updates. The Xperia X10, the X10 Mini and the X10 Mini Pro will all get new features starting with this Sunday. Here are the “key changes,” as seen by Sony Ericsson, brought by Android 2.1 to these three handsets:

Xperia X10:
• HD video recording with continuous auto-focus for high quality videos
• Upgrade of the Android platform to Android 2.1
• New back up and restore application, with extended content back up
• 5 homescreens for apps, widgets, shortcuts and folders
• Social phonebook which automatically syncs contact pictures from Facebook and shows when your friends are online

Xperia X10 mini and X10 mini pro:
• Improved Bluetooth functionality with support for sending and receiving pictures, contacts and more
• New backup and restore application with extended content back up
• Automatic synchronization of your contact pictures between Facebook and your phone book
• Improved ways of handling pictures, audio, text and numbers in your messages
• Upgrade of the Android platform to Android platform 2.1

The update will be rolled out in the PM hours of Sunday (European Time) but that doesn’t mean all markets will receive it at the same time, so don’t despair if by Monday your Xperia X10 doesn’t have Android 2.1 on board. In fact Sony Ericsson warns us that not all Xperia X10 versions will get there at the same time and it might take a few days for some owners to get the Android 2.1 update. But everyone will get it.

This is long overdue of course, I’ll be happy to see the thing actually update.

I have an unlocked and unbranded x10, I hope the update becomes available at the same time and not after the “carrier” phones are done updating….
