Honda Insight To Get Better Fuel Efficiency With Longer Engine Stop Times [Honda Tweaks Hybrid Insight Engine's Stop-Start Time To Improve Fuel Efficiency & Increase MPG]

Honda’s insight is one of the more popular hybrid cars in the market. While its main competitor is the Prius, they are in two distinctly different classes, at least in terms of size. The main advantage of the Insight is its low price. If only it were more fuel-efficient, it will be an even sweeter ride. And that’s what Honda’s engineers have just done.

Honda UK is tweaking the hybrid car’s stop-start system so that the internal combustion engine can be turned off for longer periods of time when not needed. Originally, the engine will be stopped only as long as 30 seconds, because it’s pre-programmed for worst-case scenarios, such as heavy rains, high vehicle load and other such conditions. With the new system, the Insight’s engine can be in “stop” mode for up to 90 seconds. This will be enough for most scenarios when the hybrid’s petrol-fed engine can be stopped, such as while waiting for the red light to turn green.

Honda will also implement the same changes to the Jazz hybrid (known in US markets as the Fit).
