Google Maps For Android Updated, Now Includes Real-Time Google Latitude Updates

Google Updates Maps For Android, Now At Version 4.6 With Several Changes & New Features Included

Another week, another update for the Google Maps app on Android. It seems they are coming rather frequently these days with the last being just about one month ago. That aside though, this latest update brings the version number up to 4.6 and has added a few improvements and new features.

The first two items on the list for version 4.6 of Google Maps includes an updated layout for Place Page reviews and more ways to filter search results. As for the Place Page reviews, this is more of a minor update, but at the same time it will be nice for those who prefer a common design.

  • “Reviews from around the web” for highlighting sites that have high-quality reviews about the place.
  • “Reviews from Google users” for reviews posted directly to Google Maps by other users.

According to Google, the Place Page results on Android will now have the same design and layout as the Place Pages on a regular computer. Not having ever checked Place Pages in a regular browser I am going to have to take their word.

That brings us to the next, which is another update. This latest is in regards to the search results and how you now have more options available to filter and narrow down those results. Granted, not the biggest change, but still nice sounding. After all, the less information you are being presented with, the easier to read and navigate on a smaller screen. Some of the new filters include Open Now, Neighborhood and Related Searches.

And last but not least, the real-time updating in Google Latitude. This one is still listed as experimental and not going to be of value for everyone. Bottom line, just as this implies, once activated you will be able to see faster location updates for your friends. The catch, you and your friends must be running Maps version 4.6 and Android 2.2.

With that, the latest update for Google Maps is available in the Android Market and can be installed by anyone who is running Android 1.6 or later.
