Motorola Droid 2 Software Update Begins Rolling Out

Verizon Droid 2 OTA Update Now Available, Said To Improve Battery Life, Fix Proximity Sensor, Background Email Sync & More]

Motorola and Verizon have officially begun rolling out the latest update for Motorola Droid 2 users. And as the Droid 2 is already sporting Android 2.2, it should go without saying — this is a maintenance style update. But at the same time, it is an update that seems to have several key improvements and enhancements.

The update comes as version 2.3.20, or what Verizon lists as Version.2.3.20.A955.Verizon.en.US/BP_C_01.09.07P. Furthermore it is rolling out as a gradual over-the-air update, however Verizon has also listed the steps for getting it manually. Given that to be the case, if you are feeling like you cannot wait any longer, grab your phone and navigate to Menu -> Settings -> About phone -> System updates and then click Download -> Install now and finish off with the Ok. Granted, actually doing the process is going to take some time, Verizon is estimating 5-12 minutes. And as always, we would suggest backing up those important items just in case.

With that, just what is the update offering. To begin with, and perhaps one of the nicer points is an improved battery life. Another that jumped out at me was the ability to export all your contracts to the SD card, which would be nice to do from time to time just for backup purposes.

Otherwise, the other goodies will include;

Improvements:

  • Heightened proximity sensor accuracy to enable faster screen response.
  • View the Weather widget in both landscape and portrait orientation.
  • Simpler setup, improved user interactions, and better notifications for Visual Voice Mail.
  • Background Email Sync during display inactivity for better user experience.
  • Support for email domain suffixes containing more than three characters.
  • Keep text messages organized with chronological in-box screen.
  • Edit text messages after you’ve inserted a video file.
  • Improved audio sound during recorded video playbacks.
  • Stream Guided Tour videos on device in Help Center application with ease.
  • Faster location tracking during GPS navigation.
  • Faster transitions between Wi-Fi and 3G in data connection.

Enhancements:

  • New ability to add pictures from your Gallery to a contact.
