World's Biggest Solar Power Plant Gets Final Regulatory Approval

Solar Millenium's 1,000 MW Blythe Plant Gets Green Light From Government; Still Awaits Loan Guarantee

Harvesting solar power is not only limited to residential and business rooftops. Big companies are also joining in on the game. One such company is Solar Millenium, which is set to open its Blythe 1,000 Megawatt plant as soon as regulatory approvals are cleared.

Recently, the project got the go-signal from its final regulatory hurdle, which is the right-of-way grant from the Bureau of Land Management. The only remaining hurdle would be securing a government Guarantee for the facility’s financing.

The project will require support from the government through a Loan Guarantee. Additionally, it will need to meet a December 31, 2010 deadline to be eligible under the Treasury Grant program. Otherwise, the project might have difficulty with financing.

The planned Riverside County, California solar farm is estimated to go online in the 2nd quarter of 2013, with its first 250 MW plant active. The facility will then complete the remaining three 250 MW plants seven months apart from each other.

Why is the US Government giving financing guarantees and right-of-way to foreign solar companies? There are companies here at home that can do this work. This is a travesty.
