Tipster Sees The Huawei Ideos In America, Now Undercover As The Entry-Level Comet Android Phone

Some spycam photos have emerged of a new low-cost Android 2.2 phone, the T-Mobile Comet. Surprised by this new phone? Don’t be. You may remember it by its other name, the Huawei Ideos, when it was introduced at this year’s IFA in Berlin. The low-cost Android phone looks to be swinging for the cheap market.

And don’t be surprised that the phone is coming to T-Mobile US, either. We reported last month that Tmo was very interested in the phone, citing a report from the WSJ who cited “people familiar with the matter.”

Why are we excited by the Comet? Well, it’s a cheap Android phone running 2.2, which is remarkable in it’s own right. It’s also expected to have a full-retail price of $150-$200, and to cost $50-$100 with a two-year contract, making it one of the cheapest Android phones around.

Running down some specs, it’s got a 2.8-inch display, a 528MHz processor, Android 2.2 (as mentioned), GPS, WiFi, a 3.2MP camera with no flash, a microSD card lot and the ability to create a WiFi mobile hotspot. The Ideos-branded phone was a “Google Experience” phone, meaning a stock Android UI and all the Google apps. No word if the Comet will retain this.

Originally, we heard that the Ideos would be strictly pushed as a prepaid smartphone. And, we can imagine the Comet being a pre-paid phone for T-Mobile US, as they currently offer the Symbian-powered Nokia 5230 which is similar in size and form factor.
