HP webOS 2.0 Coming To Palm Pre, Pre Plus & Pixi, Pixi Plus "In The Coming Months"

Did HP Hurt Pre 2 Sales By Announcing That webOS 2.0 Was Coming To All Current Palm Smartphones?

Yesterday we saw HP announce the Palm Pre 2 and the next version of the software — HP webOS 2.0. That said, while it was nice to see the Pre 2 made official and have those rumors put to rest, I would venture to say that the bigger portion of the news was in regards to webOS.

Granted, this could vary from person to person, however from the people that I have spoken to since, they all seem to be in agreement — the Palm Pre 2 is not enough of a jump from the current Pre Plus. The story seems to be going in that the Pre 2 is simply not offering enough to make current Pre Plus users feel the need to upgrade, and at the same time it is not offering enough to attract any new users.

Just to make note, some of the feature differences include a 1GHz processor in the Pre 2 as well as an upgrade in terms of the camera — going from 3 megapixels to 5 megapixels. Otherwise, the Pre 2 now features a “streamlined” and “sleeker design” which in reality means the display is flat as opposed to slightly rounded.

Hence the importance of webOS 2.0. And coming as what may be considered expected or as a nice gesture — Palm announced that the Pre and Pre Plus as well as the Pixi and Pixi Plus will all get an upgrade.

Here comes the mixed emotions, I really like Palm and want them to succeed, but at the same time could not justify an upgrade given the small spec bump from the Plus to the 2. Personally I can wait for those “coming months” until I see webOS 2.0.

In short, the good news is that all current Palm smartphones will get the goods in terms of the new software. The bad news with that, I would say that this could potentially convince some to not upgrade. Personally, had I not been given webOS 2.0 on my Pre Plus I may have been a little upset, but at the same time I would have wanted to get the Pre 2.

In addition, and I warn — this roll-out is going to be carrier dependent. In other words, at least for those in the US, that means it will be up to Sprint, AT&T and Verizon as to when. And if anyone remembers the length of time it took before many of us saw webOS 1.4.5 then 2.0 may be more than a few months out at this point.
