Archos 43 Android Tablet Up For Pre-Order

Droid X-Sized Archos Android Tablet Up For Pre-Order On Amazon, Just No Android Market

The Archos 43 Android tablet has hit the Amazon listings. It’s really a “tablet” per se, even though it’s included in Archos’ Internet Tablet brand. It’s basically an Android phone without the phone part, or the Android equivalent of an iPod Touch. At 4.3-inches, it’s also the same screen size as the Droid X and EVO 4G, a popular screen size with many Android users.

A common complaint of the first generation Archos tablets was that they were underpowered for Android, resulting in laggy hardware. Nobody can say that the Archos 43 is underpowered, though. It’s packing a 1GHz processor, Android 2.2 and either 16G or 32GB of storage. One of our common complaints against Archos is that the company is still charging for semi-common video formats. They’ll require you to purchase a MPEG-2 codec in order to play such popular formats as AVI, MKV, MOV, WMV, etc.

Without a cellular connection, the Archos 43 is actually fairly cheap when compared to the comparably sized Android phones. Archos has a list price of just $250 for this device, with Amazon accepting pre-orders on the ‘tablet’ for $245. Keep in mind that without Archos being a member of the Open Handset Alliance, the Android Market is not included on these devices. But there are third-party hacks to add the Android Market to the devices.

In addition to the Archos 43, the French company also has the smaller 3.2- and 2.8-inch tablets, which have already been released. A few of us here at TFTS have had our eyes on the 7.0- and 10.1-inch tablets, which are coming soon.

Are you in the market for an Archos 43? Do you think an “Android iPod Touch” could work? Tell us your take in the comments section.

Mpeg2 codec is not required to play almost all video with extensions like AVI, MKV, MOV, WMV. It is required to play uncompressed dvd ripped video with honorably huge file size. The reason they charge you for it is that the mpaa owns the rights to Mpeg2 and charges people to put it on devices. Archos allows people to put this archaic codec on these devices but they are only going to license it for people that want it and not pay (and charge you more) to put it on every device when 99.8% of the users would never use it.

In conclusion please learn about a feature before you belittle it and make false accusations.

Love it. I am just waiting for a reveiw. I will probley get one ,but the seven inch sure looks nice. I hope to hack it and get it on the Android Market. To bad Archos isn’t a member of the Alliance.
