Android 4.0 To Be Named "Ice Cream"?

Major News Outlet Reports That Ice Cream To Follow Honeycomb, Gingerbread In Android Naming Convention

Google’s Android team is known for naming their versions after delicious treats. We’ve had Cupcake, Donut, Eclair and Froyo from the search giant, and it’s public knowledge that Android 3.0 and 3.5 will be dubbed Gingerbread and Honeycomb. So, it shouldn’t surprise you that Android 4.0 will also have a tasty name – Ice Cream.

This information comes from Forbes’ technology blogger, Elizabeth Woyke, who discovered the Google naming scheme for their Android versions (C, D, E, etc. – not exactly a secret, one supposes, considering many Linux operating systems have done something similar). Following this pattern, an “I” dessert would be needed for Android 4.0. Woyke asked around.

She talked with ARM President Tudor Brown. Brown claims to be familiar with the Android roadmap – and you’d hope he would. ARM architecture processors power almost every smartphone in the market today (according to ARM, their processors power 95% of all mobile phones) – and you’d think that Google would keep those chaps in the know. Brown told Woyke that (you guessed it), Android 4.0 will be dubbed “Ice Cream”. Yum yum.

Considering the typical Android release cycle, and Google’s promise to consolidate their frequent Android updates – Woyke says to expect Android 4.0 “Ice Cream” around mid-2011, which sounds a bit too early to us.

“Ice Cream”? Good or bad name for Android? Tell us your take in the comments section.
