TomTom Updates US & Canada iPhone Navigation App

Just a short while ago I mentioned the CoPilot Live USA app for Android users, and it looks like I have another GPS related story to tell you about. Except this latest is for the other side of the smartphone fence — iPhone users. The app is the TomTom US & Canada navigation app.

The app has been updated to version 1.5 and that new number brings some new maps, new features and optimizations for iPhone 4 users. First things first, this update is free for anyone that had previously purchased the app. Otherwise, prepare to shell out $59.99.

The TomTom US & Canada navigation app is available for the iPhone or iPod touch and requires iOS 3.0 or later. And for those wondering, there is not an iPad specific version available.

With that, lets get into the new features that have arrived with this latest update. According to the change log, those include iPhone 4 optimizations, new and updated maps as well as a new feature called “navigate to photo.”

• iPhone 4 optimizations: While this app will run on devices other than the iPhone 4, only those sporting an iPhone 4 will see this benefit. This is said to have “high resolution graphics and sharper maps.” Furthermore, the menus are noted as being “more responsive and positioning is more accurate, even with limited GPS reception.”
• New & Updated Maps: These now include more than 1 million miles of roads and are described as being “the most accurate, most up-to-date maps available.”
• Navigate to Photo: This is actually a neat little feature, though I do wonder how often it would actually come in handy or get used. What it does is simple, and like the name implies. You select a photo that is stored on your phone (assuming it is geo-tagged) and can navigate to that location.

All said and done, nice updates for those who may have already purchased the app. As for me, I am still digging the CoPilot Live app and feel even better knowing that I only paid $29.99 (half the price of TomTom).
