Before the WP7-day today we witnessed the GreenPois0n vs Limera1n wars this past witness without having a clear winner. What’s certain is that the public now has at least one viable jailbreak method based on a bootrom exploit, that’s Geohot’s Limera1n, and one back-up version, the SHAtter bootrom exploit that will be released whenever Apple comes up with new hardware, either the iPad 2 or more importantly, the iPhone 5.
The next logical step in a jailbreaker’s life, especially if we’re talking about a person that wants to jailbreak the iPhone 4, is unlocking the handset and moving to greener pastures.
And the reports out there are very interesting as it looks like an unlock for iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2, for both 05.14.02 and 2.10.04 basebands, has been successfully tested and will be probably made available to iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS users in the near future.
Here are some official tweets that make everything, well, as official as Twitter can get with these kind of things:

since nearly all my received tweets ask about both BB, I can report very early “initial” 1st step success on both sides, calmed down?
this won’t be feasible before the official 4.2 release at the earliest if everything went fine
As you can clearly see, the tweets, coming from Sherif Hashim, say that the release date is going to be scheduled for after Apple launches iOS 4.2, that universal iPhone, iPod touch and iPad firmware. There’s definitely no point unlocking iOS 4.1 iPhones now and then, in three weeks time, give or take, to worry about an unlock method for iOS 4.2.
The main thing now is to wait some more, or, if you’re confident with what you’re doing, upgrade to iOS 4.1 without upgrading the baseband of the phone. Not to mention that the iPhone Dev Team already told us that a potential unlock is coming, so the future of jailbreakers that want unlocked iPhones doesn’t look to shabby.

hey so… im having trouble. i have an iphone 4 with 4.1 firmware, and i used limera1n and the jailbreak was successful, but then i tried unlocking using ultrasn0w and i realised that its baseband upgraded to 2.10.04.. can someone help me unlock? i wanna try to unlock from when i jailbroke it with limera1n…. whats my next step? :S

@klaus: You will have to wait for a while. Most likely updates on the matter will be available after iOS 4.2 comes out. We will keep you posted.

They’re waiting for Apple to release iOS 4.2 before they release the unlock. That way Apple can’t patch the unlock right away with iOS 4.2. If they were to release iOS 4.1 unlocks now, then Apple could fix it and you’ll end up stuck on iOS 4.1 since upgrading to iOS 4.2 would mean no unlock.

good news, the unlock should be coming November 24th! (the day before thanksgivings) stay tuned for apple’s new 4.2 version coming out and the unlock should come out that day :)

@Susan, You’re asking about the unlock, right? There are no updates on that yet. As for buying the iPhone 4 now, well, it depends what carrier you want to use it with. Also take into account the iPhone 5 is coming this summer.

actually I have iphone 3gs with firmware 4.2.1 with baseband 6.15.00 this is the link but the problem is the website is an Arabic one but you can follow the steps . the phone is working perfectly now after the cellphone service center become poweless and they didn’t know where the problem is.
first time I try so many ways untill the phone work but when I turn it off it won’t work again .
after I did the steps according to the website.
