Firefox Mobile 4 Beta Now Available For Android, Maemo

Firefox Mobile 4 (Fennec Mobile) Nears Final Release, Enters Beta for Android/Maemo

Mobile operating systems of this day and age give high end smartphones more power than ever before. Before such operating system were readily available you’d be lucky if your smartphone played Tetris but now a days the possibilities are virtually endless. Sure, they can make calls, send text messages and set appointments, but that’s only the beginning of it.

One of the greatest features of a modern day smartphone is its ability to browse the Internet. With high powered WebKit based mobile web browsers found on many devices, these smart phones are capable of rendering the web in a way that’s virtually identical to how it would be rendered on a traditional desktop computer. However, when it comes to actually choosing a mobile web browser, the choices may be slim depending on your platform.

If you’re an iOS user you’ll most likely know that Apple has long made it all but impossible for software developers to get web browsers that would compete with Safari Mobile onto the App Store. Of course, they eventually let Opera Mobile onto the App Store but it wasn’t met with the best reviews leaving users with just Safari.

Android, on the other hand, has several different mobile browsers available for download as no such restrictions have been imposed. Users of Mozilla’s popular Firefox desktop web browser may know that a mobile version dubbed Fennec Mobile has been available in alpha form for some time. However, it was just announced today that Fennec Mobile has been renamed Firefox Mobile and is now available to download in beta form for both Android and Maemo powered devices.

Below are some of the features of Mozilla’s latest mobile endeavor:

  • Pinch-to-zoom (Android), double-tap, or use the volume rocker (Nokia N900) to zoom in and out
  • Tabbed browsing in thumbnail view lets you easily see and open the site you want
  • Location-Aware Browsing gives you content and info relevant to your location
  • Find in Page in the Site Menu lets you quickly find text on the webpage
  • Share Page in the Site Menu lets you send content to email, Facebook, Twitter and Google Reader
  • Forget Password in the Site Menu tells a website you no longer trust to forget your private data
  • Add Search Engine in the Site Menu lets you quickly add a new search engine to your Awesome Screen
  • Context Menu lets you Open in New Tab and Share by long tapping and holding a link
  • Smart Tapping lets you tap on links, widgets and other Web content with accuracy

  • Has anyone tried out Firefox mobile? If so, how has the experience been so far?
