T-Mobile, AT&T Bringing Cell Coverage Underground in NYC
Thanks to the emergence of new technologies, staying productive while on the go is easier than ever before. Mobile broadband enabled smart phones allow an enterprising consumer to check email, set appointments and do just about everything the Internet allows, all on the go. While this is arguably a great thing as it make us more productive as a nation, it does have its limits.

To access many of these productive features a smart phone requires access to the mobile web via a wireless’s carriers mobile broadband package, as mentioned above. Some packages are cheap while some can get a bit pricey but many feel that the luxuries wireless data provides is worth the price – as is made evident by the large subscriber base many wireless carriers amass.
Unfortunately there are some dead zones where cell phone reception is no where to be found. If you couldn’t figure it out, this is a problem as no cell phone reception means no mobile broadband.
Wireless carriers have generally been good in rolling out coverage nationwide with some expectations here and there. All of you iPhone users (or AT&T customers in general) who live in San Francisco undoubtedly know what I’m talking about considering AT&T is notorious for being extremely poor in that region. Luckily, as time goes on things can and will change while wireless carriers install more cell phone towers around the country.
However, no matter how many cell towers they install above ground, people are still going to lose connectivity while under ground, taking a subway for example. Thanks to T-Mobile and AT&T, this is going to change soon as well.
It was just made known today that T-Mobile and AT&T are looking to give New York City subway stations cell phone reception in the near future. This comes after a promise made by the City 5 years ago when they told us cell phone coverage would be coming to subway stations soon. There’s no telling when exactly the roll out will be complete but both T-Mobile and AT&T have signed 10-year contracts with Transit Wireless to provide their subscribers with cell phone coverage underground so it shouldn’t be too far off.
If anyone happens to be at a New York City subway station, let us know how your reception is looking.
