Runkeeper App Goes Even More Virtual, Announces Fitness Classes For Those Looking To Get Into Running

Runkeeper Launches Fitness Classes, Currently Offering 5K & Half-Marathon Training Programs

The stereotype is familiar and for some it rings true, they say that those who spend more than a fair share of time in front of the computer or with gadgets in hand are less likely to spend the time exercising. Well, thankfully that is not always the case, and to further that, the team behind the smartphone training app Runkeeper have recently announced their latest offering, Fitness Classes.

As to what these classes are, just what the name implies, virtual training classes that will get you on the path towards finishing a running event. At present there are courses available for those looking to finish a 5K or Half-Marathon (13.1 miles).

The classes, (or at least the ones currently offered) are instructed by Olympian Jeff Galloway and are described as;

“These FitnessClasses take all of the terrific content that is available in traditional running training programs (5K, 10K, half-marathon, full marathon, etc.), and repurpose them to be delivered in a new, more engaging, highly social way. This is another step towards replicating the powerful social motivation that comes from in-person interactions, virtually, using the RunKeeper platform.”

And as someone who is a Runkeeper user, I can say that the social motivation is there. I hate to look at my logs when I had a bad month of training, or even a bad workout, because after all, my data is all shared. And not only shared on Runkeeper, but also posted to Twitter and Facebook for all to see.

As for the current classes, as I mentioned they are presently for 5K and Half-Marathon distances and there are four available.

  • 5K Time Goal, 30 minutes – Run Walk Run – 8 weeks – $9.99 for regular users and $4.99 for Runkeeper Elite users
  • 5K Beginner “To Finish” – Run Walk Run – 7 weeks – $9.99 for regular users and $4.99 for Runkeeper Elite users
  • Half Marathon Beginner – Run Walk Run – 24 weeks – $19.99 for regular users and $9.99 for Runkeeper Elite users
  • Half Marathon Time Goal, 2:20 – Run Walk Run – 18 weeks – $19.99 for regular users and $9.99 for Runkeeper Elite users

And although virtual, these classes actually have starting and ending dates and are taken (virtually) with other runners. In the end, this is just one way that you can combine your geekiness and still get out and about. Hey, at worst grab your smartphone, install and then fire up Runkeeper and just go out for any easy jog or walk. Just remember the more you connect using Runkeeper, the more you are going to feel obligated to keep adding new workouts.
