T-Mobile G2 Tethering? Not At Launch [Tmo US Confirms That Their Hot Android Phone Will Not Support Tethering Or WiFi Hotspot At Launch]

There must be something in the water. Unlike the popular Nexus One featured on T-Mobile’s network, T-Mobile’s next Android superphone, the T-Mobile G2, will not feature tethering or the ability to use the phone as a WiFi hotspot. Shocked? Don’t be, without T-Mobile officially offering tethering, they didn’t have much reason to support it.

On the G2 webpage, the FAQ says:

Tethering and Wi-Fi sharing will not be supported initially on the device, but T-Mobile knows that consumers are interested in these features and we’re working to develop a solution to support them in the future.

Remember that T-Mobile doesn’t offer any tethering plans. When contacted by AndroidandMe for comment, the company reiterated what they had said and also expanded, saying that “T-Mobile does not currently support handset tethering or offer a tethering rate plan.”

And it’s true, while T-Mobile has never officially allowed tethering, customers found it easy to do on phones that supported it, like the Nexus One. Even though T-Mobile discouraged it and even had Google block the app, those who could root their phones found ways around such problems.

T-Mobile’s comment in the FAQ may mean that they’re planning to work on tethering in the future. “We’re working to develop a solution to support them in the future.”

Considering the accessibility of Android though, you’ve got to believe that the modders and hackers out there will find a way to get tethering on the G2. Let’s just hope for their sake that T-Mobile doesn’t pull a Verizon and start banning customers who they detect are using abnormal amount of data.

    I second all that!
I had my eyes set on that device. But now, I’ll look else where. Who goes to market with half features, trickling updates here and there? Microsoft, you’re right! now T-mo is going to serve us with service packs too.

Great market study for the competitors who will learn from that stupid move and launch their next new device the right way from the get go!

I have stuck with T-mobile all that long, waiting for the right new device this year. But disappointment after disappointment is leading me to shop around now.

    I am glad I did not pre-order!

Well you can tether with tmobile. You can download easytether on your computer and your phone. It’s available on the Android Market through T-Mobile. There is a free version and a paid version, supposedly the free version blocks https:// but I’ve been able to use https:// without any issues on it. The paid version is $9.95. I use and love the free version.

I got g2 on Saturday from one of the retail stores in Waterbury CT (October 2nd). The performance of the phone is great. I can run Pandora on the background and surf the net at the same time where the H (HSPA) signal is available. I’m a bit disapointed that it does not have Tethering feature available. But let’s wait and see! Thumb up to G2.
