Sega Dreamcast VMU Gets Modded To Hold iPod Nano [The Past and Present Collide With A VMU Serving As An iPod Nano's Protective Shell]
Anyone else remember the Sega Dreamcast? Anyone else still have one? You’re not alone there–I’m raising my hand on that point too. But now, you’ve got a whole new use for your old VMU (Virtual Memory Unit): a protective outer shell for your iPod Nano.
It’s not exactly an easy process, though, to turn a VMU into an iPod Nano case, mostly because no one (until now) ever thought to do it. But as it turns out, a little disassembling, a little careful lining-up, and a little soldering (to get the headphone jack in the game) and boom! You’ve got a solid plastic shell for your admittedly rather flimsy iPod Nano.
Some folks even suggest going the extra mile and slipping the combination into an old Dreamcast controller, as the original models required (a VMU didn’t plug into the system, but rather into the controller, and from there games were saved) for added security and usefulness at the same time. Whether you go that far or not remains to be seen, but the end result is that this is a really sweet idea and anyone who’s into retro gaming should be terribly happy about a great new use for Sega’s last system.
