Apple vs Nokia: Apple Sues Nokia on British Soil, Because It Can

Apple vs Nokia Quarrel Taken to Europe, UK Courts to Rule on New Apple vs Nokia Lawsuit

In case you forgot that Apple and Nokia have sued each other in the USA for various alleged patent infringements, Apple decided to remind you about this open battle by suing Nokia, again, this time on British soil. The fight is getting more and more interesting and we can probably assume that Nokia UK will also sue Apple UK back in a short while.

A Nokia representative said that “We are investigating the claims, which appear to be based on nine implementation patents already in suit between the two companies in the United States,” while Apple hasn’t commented on the matter, at least not yet.

Why is this fight so important? Well Nokia is the number one cell phone maker in the world, by overall market share, and Apple is probably the world’s most efficient smartphone seller. So we’re looking at a fight between giants here and it will be interesting to see who will win or whether the companies will decide to settle all lawsuits eventually.

So why did Apple sue Nokia now in the UK? Nokia launched a few new phones recently, and changed CEOs but that doesn’t mean they’re going to become the next super-smartphone creators. Although we don’t have all the facts it seems that Apple took Nokia for the same allegations, but we’ll have to wait for more details about the whole truth in the near future.
Apple should be more worried about the evolution of Google’s Android platform and Android smartphone manufacturers that are thriving on Android handset sales. That doesn’t mean suing everyone that makes Android phones although Apple is already engaged in a court battle with HTC.

Reuters is also reporting that the key court hearings between Apple and Nokia are scheduled for 2012 in Delaware, so make sure you have enough pop corn supplies as this battle among giants will last for a few more years. Hopefully in the mean time Nokia will come up with an true iPhone rival, especially since the corporation is led by a new CEO ready for greatness.
