TiVo For DirecTV Delayed To 2011 [The Long Promised Box Gets Another Delay, TiVo Looking At Software]

It’s true–these days, TiVo has a lot of competitors. The Boxee Box, anything Roku…everything’s looking to push in on TiVo’s old turf. And as such, that’s making TiVo really reconsider the way it does business. One of the biggest reconsidered items is the release of the TiVo for DirecTV, which is now delayed to 2011.

The big reason?? Mostly timing related. Here’s word straight out of the TiVo folks:

“With any major service provider, you don’t really make major service introductions in the mix of the holidays,” Miller said, when asked to elaborate. “And as soon as you run into the end of the year?even retailers run into lockdown at the end of October.”

This is true–if you’ve been shopping lately you’ve probably seen at least one store already get their Christmas decorations up (for me it was a Menard’s near me, and there’s nothing that freaks you out like trees and Christmas music literally a stone’s throw from the Halloween decorations), so you know they’re starting early. For TiVo to throw out new product now would’ve been tough on the retail, but none of this likely helps DirecTV users who really wanted a TiVo.
