Mac OS X Gets Installed on HTC Shift, Awesomeness Ensues

HTC Shift Gets New Lease on Life As Hackers Give It Mac OS X Leopard

When a device makes its way to market it’s become almost rare for it to be used solely for the hardware manufacturer’s intended purpose. Thanks to a plethora of hackers within the community, everything from graphic calculators to the latest high end smart phones are getting whole new feature sets left and right.

Take for example Apple’s iPhone. Originally, this device was intended to be used for making calls, surfing the web, checking email and watching YouTube videos, among other things. However, unhappy with the device’s stock feature set, hackers took to the scene and introduced the device’s first rogue app store.

With the ability to run all of this third party software, the iPhone became infinitely more useful than it would have been had the hackers not stepped forth. The same can be said for Apple’s iPad which, when jailbroken, is given features never intended by the Cupertino based company.

However no matter how many features these devices are given through software tweaks there is no denying the fact that they are not running a desktop operating system. Of course this necessarily isn’t a bad thing considering mobile operating systems like iOS were designed for mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad but every now and then a little more functionality would be nice.

Luckily, if you’re willing to sacrifice looks and specs for a device from yesteryear, these wishes will be granted. The reason I say this is because hackers have managed to install Mac OS X 10.5 onto an HTC Shift UMPC. Unfortunately, for the time being, the device running OS X is not compatible with Bluetooth nor WiFi so you’re going to have a bit of a problem getting onto the web.

However, with its QWERTY keyboard, front facing camera and now Mac OS X, the HTC Shift is arguably more feature packed than the iPad. Then again, without Internet connectivity it’s going to be a bit had to do, well, anything but that’s just a technicality.
