Nissan Leaf No Longer Up For Pre-Order [Nissan Sells Through Initial Shipment Of Leafs, Stops Accepting Pre-Orders For The Electric Vehicle]

Despite opening up the Nissan Leaf for pre-orders back in May of this year, Nissan has now closed the pre-order process, citing that they’ve sold through their inital stock of 20,000 units three months sooner than they had hoped (December was their sales target) and now they’re closing pre-orders.

Very recently, Nissan had said they were upping the initial shipment of the Leaf from 20k cars to 25k cars. Despite that, the press release from Nissan only mentioned they had sold their target of 20k cars – so no word what happened to those extra 5,000 cars (perhaps they’re earmarked to be sold at dealers, not accepting online pre-orders). Initially, only 8,000 cars were up for pre-order before Nissan expanded it.

Nissan is heavily targeting the tech audience with these cars. They’ve been heavily marketing on tech blogs and the car will have some techie features, like a 24/7 connection to the “Nissan Data Center” which will provide car assistance and entertainment options. Like a few other cars, it’ll have Bluetooth support for managing the recharge cycles remotely.

The all-electric vehicle will get about a 100-mile range on the 24 kWh battery and synchronous AC motor. It’ll cost about $33,000 in the United States, though up to $7,000 in Federal tax credits are out there. Unlike your Prius, it’s completely emissions free. But, that comes at the cost of range (of course).

The Leaf is pinned for a limited release in late 2011, with a widespread release in 2012 for the United States. Does the Leaf do anything for you? Sound off in the comments.
