AT&T Expecting Good Q3 [Randall Stephenson Says He Expects "Record Numbers" In Q3 For The Big Blue Mobile Carrier, Shockingly Says Torch 9800 Was A Mover For The Company]

A lot of people are worried about AT&T’s well being with the rumors that their #1 phone may be heading to Verizon. AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson has promised AT&T will get “record smartphone numbers” in Q3 of this year. He also sounded off on which phones are selling good for the company, and sounded off on the company’s tiered data plans.

Stephenson said that they were about to set a company record for integrated smartphone devices, and that’s despite the strong competition from the other three major US carriers and the strong perception that AT&T’s network “sucks”. Shockingly, he said that 53% of AT&T’s customers use a smartphone (those on a postpaid contract).

Stephenson said that the iPhone 4, Samsung Captivate and BlackBerry Torch 9800 are “solid drivers” for AT&T. It’s a bit odd to see the Torch 9800 listed. Most analyst estimates had pinned the phone as selling poorly, and some analysts found that most people buying the 9800 were existing AT&T BlackBerry customers.

Stephenson went on to reiterated what was said by some other AT&T executives last week. The company is planning to launch their 4G LTE network by mid-2011. They plan to cover 70 million customers by the end of the year. A nice start for America’s #2 biggest wireless carrier.
