Phone Calls On The Galaxy Tab? Not In The United States

Samsung's 7-inch Android Tablet Losing Telephony Abilities In The US, Despite Still Coming On Carrier Contracts

When the Samsung Galaxy Tab was unveiled in Berlin at the IFA trade show, it was shown to have the ability to make voice phone calls. You couldn’t really hold it up you to your head, but you could tether a Bluetooth headset to the device and carry it around. The tablet is losing that feature in the United States, disappointing some who had hoped to use the giant Android device as a phone as well as a tablet.

So far, Samsung has only shown the Tab in the United States in relation to the four major carriers who will carry it. We know they will be offering a WiFi free version sometime, but right now, they’re only discussing the 3G-enabled tablets that will come with the carriers.

While some are lamenting the fact they’re still being forced to buy a tablet from a carrier sans voice service (“Why do I have to sign a two-year contract for just voice?”), this will probably make the monthly tariff much cheaper, than if it had been data + voice.

No reason as to why Samsung is removing the voice feature in the United States. It probably wasn’t at the behest of the carriers, since they’d probably love to sell you a voice plan too (see – Dell Streak on AT&T), but Samsung could be trying to make the monthly tariff as low as possible for US customers. Remember, a high monthly payment killed the Microsoft Kin. If Samsung wants to make a dent against the iPad, they’ve got to make this thing cheap cheap cheap.

Will the Galaxy Tab be a success? It all depends on the pricing. Samsung has promised that the device will be around $200-$300 after carrier contract, which sounds too expensive to us. Hopefully, the WiFi-only version of the device will be a little cheaper.

Bad – bad marketing approach . If the marketing folks understand these two market approached ” Not on the Bus” ” missing the Boat”

Forget about the Iphone and think “what users Want”

I work for a major wireless carrier and many friends and relatives have informed me that if it only had Voice.

Its a shame – I think of Samsung as being smart with great products that met USER population needs and wants. But in this case no voice in USA they have missed the bus.
