iPhone Marketshare Not Helped By iPhone 4
The iPhone 4 is a very popular phone. It’s sold out everywhere. Even Apple.com has a 3 week wait for the phone. So, all that success must mean that Apple’s marketshare is up in the smartphone space, right? Not so fast, my friend. Internet marketing research company comScore is reporting that Apple’s marketshare has dropped in the time since the iPhone 4 came out.

According to the guys at mocoNews, this is the difference in smartphone platform marketshare, from April 2010 to July 2010, July being comScore’s most recent report:
- Android – up 5%
- webOS – even
- iOS – down 1.3%
- BlackBerry OS – down 1.8%
- Windows Mobile 6 – down 2.2%
It looks like the iPhone antennagate issue may have affected the phone more than Apple wants to admit. Sure, the actual problem may only affect a certain population, but when you have CNN and Fox News running primetime stories on this new faulty iPhone, you can’t pretend that won’t affect the sales of the iPhone device.
The folks at mocoNews also came up with another juicy stat. The iPhone is just a single phone while Android is out on hundreds of phones, right? True, but the iPhone is available in more parts of the world. mocoNews found that the iPhone is out on 154 carriers worldwide, while Android phones are out on just 59 carriers. But, as they point out, the iPhone isn’t on some of the biggest carriers in the world (Verizon, Vodafone, China Mobile, etc.)
This really isn’t shocking. As we’ve written about before here at TFTS, it looks like Android and iOS are on a parallel course to what Windows and Mac OS did in the late 1980′s, early 1990′s. Android will hold more marketshare while iOS will have less, but with the perception of a superior product.

Any idea what specific date in July ended this quarter they’re highlighting? If it’s July 1 then this says almost nothing about the iPhone 4 sales since it didn’t come out til end of June.
Your survey is from April to July. Even if you end the survey at the end of July, you have 3 months total (April-Jun) in your survey prior to iphone4 release. So, on what basis can you conclude that iphone4 did not help boost sales?
Moreover, the period of April – Jun, iphone3gs sales are expected to drop since iphone4 news have leaked out everywhere. People will stop buying iphone and wait for the iphone4 to be out.
I’m not an iphone fan, but I just can’t stand people commenting without doing some prior logical analysis.
This is seriously skewed info that will probably be proven out in the July-Sep quarter data that should be out next month. You can’t determine iPhone 4′s effect on android when it was only out for a small portion of the period in question. I wonder if you will write about how Google’s android is failing against Apple post Antanagate if next quarter show’s iPhone market share going back up or if you will dismiss it as pent up demand for a highly anticipated phone?
And although Apple has iPhone in more countries it doesn’t have iPhone 4′s in more countries. So write your headlines with some thought and back them up with actual facts (not wishful thinking).
And lastly, any parallel between Android and iPhone vs Window and Mac should also recognize that Apple and more specifically the Mac never held anywhere near the kind of market share that the iPhone currently has. At it’s height it’s US market share was just over 10% and world wide was never even that high.
Android is a serious competitor and may eventually overtake Apple and the iPhone in market share but there are no guarantees and trying to predict a time frame a fools game with things changing as quickly as they are. How do things change when iPhone 4 is on version? What if Apple makes the equivelent of an iPhone or iPad mini/nano?
Prediction 3rd and 4th quarters see Apple grow over android, 1st and 2nd quarter they drop and then we will see what iPhone 5 is going to be like!
