New iPhone 4 Death Grip Fix Not Coming After September 30?

Apple Confirms Free Bumper Program Ends on September 30; Those Who Need Free Cases to Get Them Thereafter Too

Just before Apple’s media event we heard, from official sources all the way from Mexico, that Apple is building a new, Death Grip-free iPhone 4 version that will hit stores after September 30, the day when the free iPhone 4 bumper / case program was supposed to end.

Sure that was pretty hard to believe but we definitely expected Steve Jobs to mention the iPhone 4 during the keynote and tell us what will happen starting with September 30 regarding the whole antenna thing. That didn’t happen and with 20 more days to go until the deadline expires there doesn’t seem to be an alternative iPhone 4 Death Grip fix in the works.

The non-issue didn’t disappear, and while it’s not as popular a topic as it was a few weeks ago, the Death Grip issue is still pretty real but apparently not that serious anymore. That comes from Apple, and we wouldn’t expect the company to say anything otherwise. Here’s what was posted on the official website:

We now know that the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought. A small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case, and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free. For everyone else, we are discontinuing the free case program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30, 2010. We are also returning to our normal returns policy for all iPhone 4s sold after September 30. Users experiencing antenna issues should call AppleCare to request a free Bumper case.

So Apple doesn’t have an alternative program after September 30. That’s certainly disappointing to hear, especially as it was implied that some sort of a different solution should be available at the end of September.

The good news is that free bumper / cases will still be available after September 30 by calling AppleCare, although this might be limited to U.S. customers alone.

So how are your iPhone 4 Death Grips treating you?
