iOS 4.1 Blocks Unlock, Warns the iPhone Dev Team [iOS 4.1 Upgrade Not Advised As It Will Block Unlocking Via ultrasn0w, "Possible Forever"]

By now you definitely know that iOS 4.1 for iPhone and iPod touch is available to download, and while there are plenty of reasons to upgrade, there are also two very important reasons you shouldn’t upgrade: jailbreaking and unlocking.

iPhone unlock jailbreak

iOS 4.1 will not let you jailbreak the iPhone and iPod touch, although a new iOS 4.1 jailbreak has been confirmed today, but, most importantly, it will block your unlocking efforts.

Sure you’ll say that you have saved your SHSH blobs and can downgrade to iOS 4.0.1 or lower at any time you feel like and then go for the appropriate jailbreak and unlock procedure, but not everyone is aware of these backup methods. While that’s how everything should work, at least in theory, iOS 4.1 will ruin your whole unlock especially if you fail to save your SHSH blobs beforehand, and it looks that even if you do revert back to iOS 4.0.1 you might still not be able to unlock the iPhone with ultrasn0w.

That’s right, iPhone unlocking will be blocked by iOS 4.1 and this “official” warning comes from the iPhone Dev Team. Here’s their full quote so you get exactly the message they intended to transmit today in their “It’s a trap!” post:

Today you’ll likely start seeing iTunes innocently offer you a new version of iOS…version 4.1. Don’t accept it…it’s a trap!

This time of year there are lots of new iPhone owners, and not everybody knows that accepting new iOS updates is the surest way to lose your jailbreak and/or unlock. While those of you who have Cydia or TinyUmbrella backups of your FW hashes will always be able to get back to 4.0.1 if you make this mistake, this doesn’t hold for unlockers. There’s currently no known way to revert your baseband — if you update your baseband you’ll lose the ultrasn0w unlock, possible forever.

Please stay away from this 4.1 release until a safe jailbreak procedure (which also preserves ultrasn0w) is developed and released.

P.S. There are a tiny number of iPhone3G owners who can revert their basebands due to a flaw in very early bootloaders…you will already know if you fit in this category!

Well, you should definitely trust the iPhone Dev Team as they certainly know what they’re talking about when it comes to jailbreaking and unlocking and especially when they use phrases like “lose the ultrasn0w unlock, possible forever.”

For the love of God! 4.1 killed my iPhone and now I either get a new phone, switch carriers, or wait (months, years?)
I’m sorry for everyone that is experiencing problems, I KNOW! What about people who buy iPhones used that are unlocked and don’t even know? Apple just killed a lot of unsuspecting business.
    **NEWS FLASH**
I took my phone to the Mac Store and got a new phone. This expience has taught me an expensive lesson. I can’t be without a phone while Dev Team finds an unlock, so that was my only choice. I wonder how many people found themselves in this situation around the world?

bought an iphone of ebay for a large sum of money only to find out that it was locked by a carrier which wasn’t the one i needed. Worse is that it’s got 4.1 in it. Does anybody know if unlocking or something’s gonna come out? Or should i give it to my dog as a toy to play with……..thanks :(

Yes, a jailbreak and unlock is definitely coming, so sit tight and get something else for your dog.

It says there are a small number of 3g that can revert back to the old baseband because of a flaw. How do you know if you are one of those people?
