Google Android Reportedly Makes Up 25% Of Mobile Web Traffic

Quantcast Finds Google's Android Mobile Operating System Makes Up 25% Of All Mobile Web Traffic

In this day and age its less about hardware specs and more about what software a mobile device is running. Sure, a device with extremely low performance hardware components may not sell very well but many modern high-end devices feature virtually the same specs such as a 1GHz processor, large touch screens and HD video capture capable digital cameras.

Due to these similarities its much easier for a consumer to decide which device is right for them based on its operating system, as I mentioned above. However, when deciding what operating system to choose, things may get a bit tricky. If they’re looking for a business oriented platform, they may go with Research in Motion’s BlackBerry 6. However, if they’re looking for a more feature packed mobile OS complete with a more robust application store they may go with Google’s Android or Apple’s iOS.

If a consumer chooses to go the iOS route, there aren’t many options to choose from as the only devices runing Apple’s platform are the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. On the Android side of things, however, the options are much more bountiful with a plethora of devices spanning just about every wireless carrier in the United States.

Thanks to the mass number of Android powered devices on the market the platform has seen immense market adoption with extremely high sales numbers and activations to boot. In fact, it was just announced today that Android powered devices currently accounts for about 25% of all mobile traffic – quite the feat considering all of the competition in this area.

The study was done by Quantcast who also found that the amount of users signing onto the mobile web utilizing Android has grown significantly over the past couple of months with that trend looking to continue for some time.

While iOS and BlackBerry already have their footing in the industry, it’s going to be hard for operating systems with smaller populations to keep up like Palm/HP’s webOS. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how things unfold.
