iPod touch 4G vs iPhone 4 Retina Display Comparison; Are They Really Similar? [iPod touch 4G’s Retina Display Compared to the Same Display of the iPhone 4 Reveals the iPhone’s Slight IPS Advantage]
Following the Apple music-oriented event held on September 1 in San Francisco, we still have various questions unanswered and there are plenty of speculations and rumors going around the Internet regarding various Apple products, like the iPhone 4 and the iPod touch 4G.

If earlier we found a leaked iOS 4.1 version available only for the unreleased iPod touch 4G players now we have more details about the Retina Display of the new iPod touch. And rumors suggest that the iPod touch 4G doesn’t have a great Retina Display or at least not as good as the one found on the iPhone 4.
Apple did say that the iPod touch 4G will offer the same Retina Display as the iPhone 4, but that doesn’t mean the iPod touch’s display has all the other characteristics of the iPhone 4’s display.
Let’s look at the video below showing a video comparison between the iPod touch 4G and the iPhone 4. Notice anything different? Well it looks like the iPod touch 4G doesn’t have IPS technology. Just look at the picture all the way up top that shows you how, when looking at both screens from the same angle, the iPod touch 4G is found wanting.
If that’s not enough to raise your eyebrows then what about checking the official display specs of the iPod touch 4G and the iPhone 4?
iPod touch 4G Display
- 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display
- 960-by-640 pixel resolution at 326 pixels per inch

iPhone 4 Display
- Retina display
- 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display
- 960-by-640 pixel resolution at 326ppi
- 800:1 contrast ratio (typical)
- 500 cd/m2 max brightness (typical)
- Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating on front and back
- Support for display of multiple languages and characters simultaneously

Notice any differences? It looks that the iPod touch 4G has a poorer display when it comes to specs, and I find it weird that Apple omitted that from the recent keynote script. Here’s what Steve Jobs did say about the Retina Display:
The new iPod touch has our amazing Retina Display in it, the same thing we pioneered with the iPhone. It’s got four times the number of pixels; at 326 pixels per inch you can’t even discern the individual pixels! It’s a remarkable display: 24-bit color, LED-backlit; it is the best display in the world. And that’s what everyone had said who’s seen it on the iPhone. It is now in the iPod touch.
That’s what the man said and this doesn’t leave that much room for interpretation. The iPhone 4 and the iPod touch 4G have the same kind of display, which means they must be identical in specs. So why is it than some people suggest the iPod touch 4G display is inferior? What do you say, Apple?

Oh, and yes, Apple made available the video of the September 1 event on YouTube, so anyone can check out the official presentation of the iPod touch 4G starting at around the 32:41 minute mark.
