iPod touch 4G vs iPhone 4 Retina Display Comparison; Are They Really Similar? [iPod touch 4G’s Retina Display Compared to the Same Display of the iPhone 4 Reveals the iPhone’s Slight IPS Advantage]

Following the Apple music-oriented event held on September 1 in San Francisco, we still have various questions unanswered and there are plenty of speculations and rumors going around the Internet regarding various Apple products, like the iPhone 4 and the iPod touch 4G.

iphone4 vs ipod touch 4g retina display

If earlier we found a leaked iOS 4.1 version available only for the unreleased iPod touch 4G players now we have more details about the Retina Display of the new iPod touch. And rumors suggest that the iPod touch 4G doesn’t have a great Retina Display or at least not as good as the one found on the iPhone 4.

Apple did say that the iPod touch 4G will offer the same Retina Display as the iPhone 4, but that doesn’t mean the iPod touch’s display has all the other characteristics of the iPhone 4’s display.

Let’s look at the video below showing a video comparison between the iPod touch 4G and the iPhone 4. Notice anything different? Well it looks like the iPod touch 4G doesn’t have IPS technology. Just look at the picture all the way up top that shows you how, when looking at both screens from the same angle, the iPod touch 4G is found wanting.

If that’s not enough to raise your eyebrows then what about checking the official display specs of the iPod touch 4G and the iPhone 4?

iPod touch 4G Display

  • 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display
  • 960-by-640 pixel resolution at 326 pixels per inch

iPhone 4 Display

  • Retina display
  • 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display
  • 960-by-640 pixel resolution at 326ppi
  • 800:1 contrast ratio (typical)
  • 500 cd/m2 max brightness (typical)
  • Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating on front and back
  • Support for display of multiple languages and characters simultaneously

iPhone4 retina display specs

Notice any differences? It looks that the iPod touch 4G has a poorer display when it comes to specs, and I find it weird that Apple omitted that from the recent keynote script. Here’s what Steve Jobs did say about the Retina Display:

The new iPod touch has our amazing Retina Display in it, the same thing we pioneered with the iPhone. It’s got four times the number of pixels; at 326 pixels per inch you can’t even discern the individual pixels! It’s a remarkable display: 24-bit color, LED-backlit; it is the best display in the world. And that’s what everyone had said who’s seen it on the iPhone. It is now in the iPod touch.

That’s what the man said and this doesn’t leave that much room for interpretation. The iPhone 4 and the iPod touch 4G have the same kind of display, which means they must be identical in specs. So why is it than some people suggest the iPod touch 4G display is inferior? What do you say, Apple?

Oh, and yes, Apple made available the video of the September 1 event on YouTube, so anyone can check out the official presentation of the iPod touch 4G starting at around the 32:41 minute mark.

@Udoy, nice use of grammar skills there, but moving past that, I’ll have to tell you we did go to Apple’s website before writing that up. Did you do it too before commenting?

I don’t beleive this […} website, don’t underestimate apple there devices are true

    • Chris Smith

@udoy: Please use a decent language when commenting, and by decent I mean proper spelling too. Also, while we’re at it, you should definitely check Apple’s website and maybe comment there on their inaccuracies. Maybe they got their products’ specs and features wrong…

  • Udoy

I already know its not there, it doesnt say retina display on Tech specs (apple website) so what are you trying to say?
That the games opimized for retina display HD wont work on ipod touch 4g?? And when you put your ipod touch in landscape does it fade out? Pls answer all these questions

Right there it states “retina display.” After being mentioned on every page except the tech specs i think its safe to say the retina display IS included, however from looking at the device, because I own one, I can tell you that it does not have IPS Tech.

The ipod touch 4 display is pretty disappointing aside from the high resolution. I know, because I have one. The contrast ratio is horrible compared to my nexus one phone. There is no such thing as black on my ipod touch 4, it’s called gray… and the viewing angle sucks since it isn’t an IPS display. Apple quality is going down, down down. When I pay 400 dollars for a device that fits in my pocket, I expect quality. That isn’t what I got. I expected the same display technology that is in the iphone 4. I didn’t get it. The camera is crap by the way. Low resolution, like my first digital camera in 1998, and poor quality overall compared to my nexus one camera. I fully expected my new ipod touch to replace my nexus one as a media device (movies, photos, etc). As it stands, not so. I should have just kept my touch 3rd gen and been happy with it.

  • Slim shady

Arleight so stop complaining all of you, you got what you payed for. And why did you pay 400$ for it? I didn’t expect it to be like the iPhone at all because it’s NOT an iPhone. I’m only getting it because I shoot YouTube videos and they just launched xfinity in northeast USA. if you wanted iPhone quality, get the iPhone, enough said

  • Justin

Hey, Chris, were you the one who took that video? If so, can you tell me what camera you were using? The clarity in that was almost movie quality. I need one of those.

    • Chris Smith

@Justin, no I’m not the one that did the recording.

  • ek

I just bought an ipod touch 4G and was quite disappointed by its display, so i started googling and found this page.

Viewing angles are not nearly as bad as my previous 2nd gen ipod touch but not much better either. It’s nowhere as ‘magical’ as steve jobs and various review sites make it out to be. Sharpness isn’t a big deal either as my droid/milestone from last year looks just as sharp. Sigh.

I suppose it’s not called a ‘reality distortion field’ for nothing.

  • Sam

I just got an iPod touch 4g for Christmas and I have to say, you are the whiniest bunch of twats i’ve ever seen.
The display on this device is easily the clearest I have ever seen, no matter how close I look I can’t discern the pixels, and the contrast/ brightness is perfect. Secondly, who cares about the viewing angle? Unless you regularly have a crowd of people with bad eyesight trying to look at your iPod, it won’t matter. Finally, a 0.7mp camera is fine unless you want to do some real photography, and if you do, why are you using an iPod??
Just be happy with what you have, I know I am.

  • iSayuSay

    @Sam:

Agreed, ipod touch 4g is incredible for the size. Almost no lag time, OS run slick and smooth

For $300 32Gb, this is a piece of hardware, I bought many apps and this pod doesn’t even blink

And this device worth more than iPhone or iPad .. i think iPod touch 4g has the best value for money among other iDevice today

I love this pod, and who cares about black level. For black level performance I have my 60inch Kuro

I don’t use my ipod touch to take real photography. I don’t use it to hear music via headphone (unless for jogging)

I want a device that can be instantly used when I need browsing in full page

I want a device that can manage my emails and reply them in a cool way

And this tiny device give em all … why should I bother with iPad .. it’s just iPod touch XL with super XL price … damn u Apple for making such an expensive iPad

  • Joe

I am very pleased with my Ipod touch 4g. I don’t expect them to be able to fit a 5 Mega pixel camera in its slim size… kind of like the retina display. if they put those things into the ipod, it would have to be larger. Apple loves sleek new designs. just look at the Air. but it is very pleasing to own and worth the buck.

  • Fredy

    @Sam, AMEN! AGREED!
What is up with all this whining? Are we like nerds gone wild or something? LOL. Not that it’s a bad thing because I’m a tech freak myself but geesh! Be happy with what Apple gives us. I personally think the retina display on my iPod 4G looks the same as the iPhone 4. Enough said!

  • Ann

Hi! I bought an iPod touch 4g, and I’m a user of an iPod touch 2g. After getting the same app on both iPods which required a big graphic capacity, I can certify that the iPod touch 4g has a sucky, if not worse, retina display compared to the iPod touch 2g’s normal display. The app was inotia 2, and I can tell you, I enjoy playing it ( graphic wise) a lot more on my older iPod touch. I think it’s because the iPod touch 2g doesn’t use retina, just uses the normal display, while the iPod touch 4g HAS to use retina, a display that was sadly badly produced for the iPod touch 4g. For the speed/quality of Internet browsing, however, I enjoy using my newer iPod touch, except for the fact that the newer one can’t watch .mp3 files! That’s right, it can perfectly watch YouTube, yet anything on the web (such as family guy episodes for myself) you can’t watch it! Yet the iPod touch 2g offered this great addition… But this topic is about retina display, so I won’t add anything else. All in all, the new iPod touch could have been made much, much better, yet apple (and you’re hearing this from an apple fangirl) failed to provide us the great quality that myself and others were expecting.

  • Don

It’s not really the fact that the display is inferior to the iphone 4. It’s the fact that apple tried to market it as if the display were the same in every way to the iphone 4.

  • Brent

    Ann,

your talking about AVI/M4a files not mp3. And anything else on the web is usually incompatible as YouTube is already installed with the software required to run.
Mp3 files are media files (music) that is one of the main reasons to buy one. (Listen to music)
