Dell Streak Getting Android 2.1 ‘Eclair’ Update Over The Air Now [Reports Suggest Android 2.1 'Eclair' Update For Dell Streak Is Live Over The Air Now]

The electronics industry in general is very cut throat one with companies competing vigorously against one another to in an attempt to hit consumers with the latest and greatest products. The smartphone industry, in particular, is most likely one of the most competitive markets with countless high powered devices spanning wireless carriers looking to entice potential buyers.

In fact, just about every day a new device gets announced that features beefed up specs looking to dethrone other high end devices. These features may include a bigger touchscreen, faster processor, more RAM, faster mobile broadband or a built-in digital camera with a higher megapixel count. However, no matter how much a hardware manufacturer manages to pack into a phone, there is virtually no chance it will be a success unless it has capable software.

Thanks to the introduction of Google‘s open source Android mobile operating system back in 2008, just about every hardware manufacturer in the game has access to a fully capable platform that can keep up with the best of them. Currently sitting at version 2.2, Android has become one of the most popular mobile platforms currently available today with a whole slew of devices running Google’s software stack.

Unfortunately, just because the latest version of Android is 2.2 doesn’t mean every available handset runs the newest version. In fact, many devices currently on the market are running earlier versions of the mobile OS with hardware manufacturers rushing to get their respective Froyo updates out the door.

The Dell Streak is one such device that looks to push what we think of as a mobile phone to another level with a 5-inch touchscreen, 1GHz processor and front/rear facing cameras. Unfortunately, while the device has specs that puts it in the high end spectrum, the Dell Streak shipped with Android version 1.6 rendering its software ancient by the tech industry’s time frame.

Luckily, Dell has promised that the Streak will be getting updated to 2.1 ‘Eclair’ sometime this month and it seems that today is the day. Reports have begun spilling in that say Dell has officially begun pushing out the Android 2.1 update for their Streak smartphone/tablet over the air. This means that if you have a Dell Streak you should be getting a notification very soon for a system wide update, if you haven’t already.

Sure, it may not be Android 2.2 but it is definitely a step in the right direction and a look at what’s to come.

I got the OTA for my Dell Streak on Saturday (9/4/10), but it didn’t seem to upgrade anything. The OS is still 1.6
The build number might have changed, but that’s about it. Kind of disappointing, really, since the upgrade was 82+ megs! Having used 1.5 on my G-1, 1.6 on my MyTouch, and 2.1 on my Samsung Vibrant, I know that what’s still on my Streak is 1.6. What gives with this?
