Toshiba's StorE Drive Holds Piles of Video
For those of you who like the thought of massive piles of home media available to you within a few button presses, you’ll want to spare a thought for the Toshiba StorE, one of the simpler solutions for media storage and rapid playback.
The Toshiba StorE has a whopping two terabyte hard drive, but connects to your television by HDMI, without an intervening computer. However, you actually can connect this to a computer as it comes with its own internal Wi-Fi capability and Ethernet port. It will boast supporting subtitles in multiple languages (a full list isn’t yet available) and it will even go so far as to offer its own tiny LCD screen so you can preview the content without the television being connected or even turned on.
Interestingly, there’s no DivX or XviD support on this, so there may be some limits on just how much use you get out of this (though the idea of being able to store about 500 DVDs’ worth of space in one set-top box is definitely appealing), especially considering that Toshiba wants $300 for one of these. It almost seems like a better deal to hook up your television as a computer monitor and grab a two terabyte external hard drive.
