iPad iOS 4.2 Apple Web Page Reminds Us Why We Want New Firmware on the iPad

Apple Puts Up Teaser Page for iOS 4.2 for iPad

Apple promised that the iPad will get iOS 4 and all its magical features in September, but what Apple did was simply postpone the update to November. And it’s not iOS 4 that’s coming to the iPad but iOS 4.2, which appears to be a unified firmware that will be available to iPhones and iPod touches too.

So Apple went ahead and put up a teaser web page to remind us what iOS features we’re currently missing from the iPad and why we really need to iOS 4.2. And Apple makes some bold statements on the page. Just check out the opening paragraph:

iOS 4 is the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. And soon iPad owners will get to enjoy its 100+ new features and innovations — including multitasking, folders, printing, and more. Look for iOS 4.2 coming in November for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

iOS is definitely the mobile software that inspired important changes in most of the current mobile platforms, but I don’t know if it’s the “world’s most advanced operating system.”

So why does the iPad need iOS 4.2? Well there are various features that will improve your whole iPad experience:

  • Multitasking – the iPhone and iPod touch currently have multitasking but a mobile device like the tablet will truly benefit from such a feature
  • Folders
  • Printing – as announced during the official September 1 keynote, wireless printing is coming to the iPad especially since
  • AirPlay – wireless streaming to AppleTV and AirPlay speakers or receivers
  • GameCenter – social gaming on the iPad and every other iOS 4.2 device
  • Better email – just like on the iPhone
  • Find text on web pages – a must feature of every browser now heading to the iPad
  • Enhanced enterprise support
  • Accessibility enhancements
  • Keyboard and dictionary enhancements

In case you already have an iPhone or iPod touch, then you’re already familiar with most of the features above, but if you only have an iPad, then prepare for a much better overall experience on your tablet.

Since iOS 4.1 is going to be available really soon for iPhone and iPod touch and iOS 4.2 is being groomed for a November release, we can’t but wonder whether the iPhone Dev Team will attempt jailbreaking iOS 4.1 or wait for iOS 4.2 instead?
