HP and Hynix Team Up To Make Memristors
The idea of the memristor–a combination of MEMoRy and resISTOR–has been around since the seventies, but the crew out at HP is joining forces with Hynix to get them in devices. And what does this mean for you? How’s a double-sized keychain drive sound?
HP is pretty well convinced that its memristor technology has the stones to take on Flash memory and win, so they’re getting a series of memristor devices ready to go. Just last month, the HP crew proved that a memristor could handle logic and data storage, so basically, it was ready to tackle most anything that could be thrown at it.
What this means is that, by about 2013 according to current projections, memristors will replace DRAM and Flash storage, among other things, and do so in the same amount of space with about double capacity. Not only that, it’s expected to work a whole lot faster and use much less energy to operate, giving your mobile gear extended battery life to boot.
We’ll have to keep an eye out and see what comes of memristor gear, but if it works like HP wants, then look for these to show up most everywhere.
