Sony Ericsson To Give Android Powered Xperia 10 Eclair Next Month

Sony Ericsson Says Their Android Powered Xperia X10 For AT&T Will Have Android 2.1 By End Of September

There are many Android powered devices on the market today but only some of them feature the operating system’s latest version; 2.2, otherwise known as Froyo. However, as time goes on the various hardware manufacturers will push out Android 2.2 to just about every capable handset currently on the market leaving some devices doomed to oblivion.

Sony, for one, has the Xperia X10 on AT&T running Google’s Android version 1.6 which just launched on August 15th. While the device feature specs that compete with some of the most high end devices, it is still are lacking in terms of firmware. Luckily, Sony has taken to Twitter today to announce that they will be getting the Android 2.1 update out for the Xperia 10 devices sometime by the end of September.

Actually, they didn’t even officially announce it, instead they were just responding to a Tweet questioning when the update would be out, which you can view below:

@KOR_9S We can only confirm that the upgrade to Android 2.1 is due for release before the end of September this year. We hope this helps.

If you’re not familiar with the Xpera X10, let me give you a quick refresher; it features a 4.0-inch capacitive touchscreen, a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, an 8.1 megapixel camera with autofocus, facial recognition, geotagging, image stabilization and more along with an accelerometer, a digital compass and more.

While Android 2.1 won’t be bringing with it any hefty features, the Xperia X10 currently runs version 1.6 so this update will give consumers access to all of the features found within 2.0. This includes an updated browser UI with deeper HTML5 integration, the improved virtual keyboard, better hardware optimization and everything else we’ve come to know and love when the update got pushed out for other phones.

With devices such as the Samsung Captivate and iPhone 4 getting all of the hype over at AT&T, it’s going to be nice to have another completely capable competitor in the form of the Xperia X10 to garner sales. Of course, if you’re one to hate AT&T for their shoddy service, you probably won’t care either way.
