New iPod touch 4G: iPad-like 3G Data Features on Board?
If you thought the new iPhone 4 rumor we’ve seen earlier today was weird then wait till you get a load of this. A recent rumor is saying that the next-gen iPod touch, the forth-generation about to be unveiled tomorrow at Apple’s special media event might feature a special Micro-SIM slot that would transform it into a 3G connected device.

Are you ready for this? The iPod touch 4G is actually 3G according to this rumor (I couldn’t resist not coming up with that phrase) but I’d rather believe that Apple is secretly building an iPhone 4 with a better external antenna instead.
So let’s assume this rumor is based on real facts. How come we haven’t heard about this earlier on? After all we now know the iPod touch will offer an iPhone 4-like Retina Display, a camera with flash or microphone, a front-facing camera for calls and FaceTime support via email. The device will not resemble the iPhone 4 but will have a slightly changed overall design similar to the top part of the MacBook Pro, if memory serves right.
Those are just about all the rumors we’ve seen around the Internet, in the recent weeks but Micro SIM support isn’t one of them.
And why would Apple want to offer us yet another connected iOS device? The iPod touch can definitely help you surf the web as it is via Wi-Fi, do we need a 3G radio inserted inside? I mean, why not buy an iPhone if you want your iPod touch to connect to the web while on the go? The iPhone 4 is a better iPod touch (depending on how you hold it) and will let you go online, listen to music, and communicate with friends and family.
If you want a device just for browsing the web, a tablet, then why not buy the iPad, which has plenty of screen real estate to improve that mobile Internet browsing experience? Or get any other tablet that comes, or will come with 3G support in the near future.
Not to mention that a 3G-enabled iPod touch will put even more pressure on AT&T’s network. Is that something Apple would want? And where would the antenna be placed? Putting it somewhere inside is like saying it’s not worth placing it on the outside, if you know what I mean!
There are probably lots of pros to having a 3G radio on the iPod touch, but maybe we should see that only in the not-so-near future, at a point where all devices we play with, will be, one way or another, either controlled by robots or connected to the web at all times.
Luckily all our questions will be answered tomorrow when Apple will launch the new iPod line. So stay with us as we’re going to offer you a play-by-play report on everything that’s going to happen at Apple’s music-related event.
