Intel Officially Acquires Infineon
Finally, after rumors of Intel acquiring Infineon surfaced sometime in July, the deal has been closed. Intel has formally acquired mobile chip maker Infineon, the same company that makes chips for smartphones like the Apple iPhone.
The deal reportedly cost a cool $1.4 billion which should give Intel a big boost in the mobile market. Infineon is ranked fourth in cellular baseband shipments, with around 10.7 percent of the market last year.
With the demand for global wireless solutions reaching a feverish pitch, the recent Intel acquisition should be something that can help Intel’s hold in the said market.
The deal enables Intel to offer a portfolio of products which include wireless options such as WiFi, 3G, WiMax and LTE (4G).
The deal is said to be ironed out by the end of the first quarter of 2011 after both the board of Intel and Infineon gained the nod for the consummation of the said sale.
Any ideas on which phone or new chips that will come out by 2011? Well, we have just a couple of months to go to find that out.
